Verily, this dunyaa is sweet and green!
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:
“Verily, the dunyaa (world) is sweet and green; and verily, Allah is making you to succeed each other in it, generation after generation, in order to see how you act. So beware this world (and its temptations) and beware of women. Because verily, the first trial for Banee Isra’eel was by way of the women!”[1]
This authentic narration is narrated by Abee Sa’eed al-Khudree He said; the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:
“Verily, the dunyaa (world) is sweet and green...!”
Sweet in taste and green in appearance. And the best and nicest flavour is the sweet taste. And the best colour is green. This dunyaa shows itself in various forms to the people, fascinates and misleads them with charming decorations and worldly enjoyments. Due to this it appears sweet and green. However, those who know the reality of the dunyaa, and does not let himself be mislead, knows that it is cursed. Due to its form it appears sweet and green to the people. It is therefore up to a person to be aware of it and not to deviate to that which has been placed in it. Allah (جل وعلا) has placed you in it as successors, generation after generation, to remain in it in order to be able to worship your Lord.
“...Allah is making you to succeed each other in it, generation after generation, in order to see how you act…”
He (Allah, ‘azza wajal) is testing you to see what you will do in this dunyaa. Are your actions in accordance with what Allah (جل وعلا) pleases, or angers?
“So beware of this world…”
Be warned regarding it! Because the dunyaa appears in a way that can seduce you. Know its reality and know that it is merely a temporary abode. Just like a person who temporarily stands in the shadow of a tree. Will a person like this have high expectation? The answer is no.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:
“Be in the dunyaa like a stranger or passer-by”
The one who pictures himself as a stranger or passer-by, will not tend towards the dunyaa. Such a person will beware the dunyaa and focus himself on that for which he is created. And that is to worship Allah (جل وعلا).
“...and beware of women…”
There is no doubt whatsoever that women are a trial/test. When a woman goes outside, the hope of Shaytaan increases (to seduce her and seduce others by way of her). And likewise she is followed by glancing (eyes). The woman must therefore not be a cause for the deviation and seduction of people. It is up to her that she only goes outside for a requirement. However, the origin is that she stays at home like Allah (جل وعلا) says:
{And stay in your houses…} [Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33]
So when the woman does go outside, she must not be a cause for the deviation, seduction and tribulation of people. They must go outside unperfumed. With regards to the men, they must lower their gaze and avert one’s eyes from the women.
“...and beware of women. Because verily, the first trial for Banee Isra’eel was by way of the women!”
Their first trial was by way of the women. Then subsequently they fell (gradually) into other sins after this tribulation. Subsequently, they fell into other tribulations, up until stepped out of their religion. May Allah help us!
