The story of the companion Thumamah ibn Uthal, may Allah be pleased with him
The student reads:
“From Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that Thumamah embraced Islam, thereupon the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem) said: “Take him to the wall of tribe so and so and order him to bath (Ghusl)”. Narrated by Ahmad.”
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, comments:
“Yes, this is Thumamah ibn Uthal, the chief of the people from Yamamah, may Allah be pleased with him. He went to the Umrah whilst he was a Kafir. Then a troop from the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem) caught him and took him to Madinah as a prisoner. They took him to Madinah, because Allah intended good for him. Then the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem) tied him to the pillar of the mosque. And whenever he would pass by him he would ask him: “How are you Thumamah?” So he would say: “Good. If you forgive then you are forgiving a thankful and if you want money then take what you want.” Every day he would enter upon him and ask him. At the end the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem) released him and said: “Release Thumamah! Release Thumamah!” So they released him and at this Allah placed Islam in his heart, he embraced Islam and bore witness that there is no deity worthy of worship truly except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. He entered into Islam. And subsequently the man (Thumamah) admitted that no one was more hated…
(the shaykh starts crying)
…no one was more hated to him than the Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem) and that no religion was more hated to him than the religion of the Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallem), until he saw him, watched him and saw how he treated him then he embraced Islam, may Allah be pleased with him.”
