The ruling on men letting their garments drag down below the ankles

Question:

"May Allah be good to you, oh eminent Shaykh, and reward you with good. This questioner asks about the authenticity of these two narrations in which the Messenger, may peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What is below the ankles (of a lower garment) is condemned to the Hellfire." and the hadeeth: "Allah will not look at the one who lets his garment drag down out of pride on the day of Judgement."

Answer:

"All of them (these narrations) are authentic. They are authentic and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. And (there is also) the hadeeth:

"There are three (types of) people to whom Allah will not speak on the day of Judgement nor will he purify them, and for them will be a painful punishment;
  • the one who reminds the people of what he has given them,
  • the one who lets his garment drag down below the ankles and
  • the one who sells his goods by false swearing."[1]

Thus, oh my brothers, there is nothing good in letting the garments drag down below the ankles. However, it is harmful, a disadvantage, and your movements become restricted and difficult. It is harmful and a disadvantage for you. Letting the garments drag down below the ankles is harmful.

'Umar (Ibn al-Khattab), may Allah be pleased with him, said to a man:

"Lift up your lower garment above the ankles! That is safer with regards to your religion and longer lasting with regards to your lower garment."

So it is therefore not befitting for the brothers to be easy going with this affair. For it is a huge threat indeed:

"Whosoever lets his garment drag down (below the ankles) out of arrogance then Allah will not look at him on the day of Judgement."[2]

and in the (other) hadeeth:

"What is below the ankles (of a lower garment) will be in the Hellfire."[3]
