The ruling on fasting Friday when it coincides with the Day of 'Arafah

Question:

"She says: The Day of 'Arafah fell on Friday, and I fasted Friday, which in fact was the Day of 'Arafah. However, I did not fast Thursday; am I sinful?"

Answer:

Shaykh Ibn Bāz: We hope that there is no sin upon you, because your intention was not to single it (Friday) out with fasting. You only fasted it because it was the Day of 'Arafah.

However, it would have been better if you had fasted Thursday together with it, because the Messenger ﷺ forbade singling out Friday with fasting for the one who does so supererogatery. You are fasting supererogatery.

Thus, it is safer if you fast Thursday together with it, even if your intention (of fasting Friday) is due to the Day of 'Arafah.
It is safer for a believer to strive to be in harmony and compliant with the Prophet ﷺ and his orders.

As for singling it (Friday) out with fasting due to seeking its virtue, then this is impermissible, because the Messenger ﷺ prohibited it.
However, if he fasts it because it is the Day of 'Arafah; then we hope he won't be sinful. Nonetheless, if he is cautious and fasts with it Thursday; then that it is safer.

Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez bin 'Abdullah bin Baaz, may Allah have mercy upon him.
