The ruling of cursing Allah, His Messenger and the Religion
Question:
“May Allah bless you and your knowledge. The questioner says -and it seems that this question is from the lecture this morning- he says:
What is said about the one who believes, that the one who intentionally curses Allah is not a disbeliever? Can we say that he is a Murji?”
Answer:
“The word ‘Murji’ is not enough for him. The word ‘Murji’ is not enough for him. Rather he is a disbeliever!
Ishaaq ibn Rahwayh, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
“Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah agree upon that the one who curses Allah, or the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassallam), or curses the Religion, then he is a disbeliever.”
This ijmaa’ is related by whom? Ishaaq ibn Rahwayh; the great and well known scholar, the contemporary of Imam Ahmed, may Allah have mercy on him. He said: “Ahlus-Sunnah agree upon…” Memorise this statement! “Ahlus-Sunnah agree upon that the one who curses Allah…” or curses what? “the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassallam), or curses the Religion, then he is a disbeliever.”
No doubt regarding the disbelief of the one from whom this is coming from. And I have mentioned to you today that I have heard this in many of the Arabic lands, with great remorse. I have heard with my own ears, and I am not relating it from someone. The cursing of Allah, the cursing of the Religion, the cursing of the Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassallam). Even when he is angry at his vehicle or riding-animal, then he will curse your Deen (Religion). What is the Deen, what is your Deen? The Deen is the Deen of Islam, oh brother. There is nothing which is called Deen except… The Deen with Allah is what? Al-Islam! So that which has led you to utter this statement…
And therefore, the one from whom this originates… I ask a question; which of the two is lesser? Which of the two weighs heavier and is more dangerous? The statement of those who said (about the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam and his companions): “We have never seen like these reciters of ours, they have the hungriest stomachs, the most lying tongues and are the most cowardice in battle.” Or the one who curses Allah or His Messenger or the Religion? Which of the two is worse? The second!
Okay, (regarding) the first statement: Did Allah not declare those who uttered it to be disbelievers due to uttering it?
{If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah (‘azza wajal), and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) that you were mocking?" Make no excuse…}
Finish the verse!
{…you have disbelieved after you had believed.}[1]
And the most correct is, that this verse is not about the hypocrites. This is what has been established. Isn’t it? The intent here is not the hypocrites. The hypocrites are already disbelievers. But Allah (‘azza wajal) says:
{…you have disbelieved after you had believed.}
So he believed and then disbelieved due to this sentence!
Of course, regardless of some narrations which state that he eventually repented and that Allah (‘azza wajal) did accept it; the fact of the matter is that he became a disbeliever due to this statement. But he repented; meaning that he renewed what? That he renewed his Islam (i.e. once again enters Islam). Verily this statement is apostasy (riddah), apostasy.
By the way, there is something that crossed my mind. Their statement… Some people, when you debate with them regarding a religious matter, then he says:
“My brother, go away! {To you be your religion, and to me my religion.}”[2]
I testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah! Your religion is different from my religion? How can one say this? This statement is very dangerous. The religion is one! Your conviction that there are two religions; this is a disaster!
{Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.}[3]
{And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him}[4]
Allow me to focus on these matters. Because all praise is due to Allah, there are many guests in the Mosque of the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam). We ask Allah to accept it from them. And perhaps that those who are free from this can remind whom? Remind their brothers. Subsequently I ask you regarding these matters I’ve mentioned; are they present in the Islamic world or not?
They are present. Rather, what? Rather they spread a great deal! And some are not aware of them, they are not aware of them. He says them just like this although they are dangerous! He makes a statement, and from the start does not think about its meaning. And he does not think about its meaning. SubhanAllah, he doesn’t think about that it is disbelief! He doesn’t realise, because he does not ponder the statement accurately when he utters it. So it is upon the Muslim to seek understanding, and any statement about which he is in doubt, he has to ask who? The people of knowledge.
{So ask of those who know the Scripture, if you know not.}[5]
Until tomorrows lecture, I trust you to Allah. May Allah give me and you success in all that is good. And may the salaah and the salaam be upon our Prophet Muhammad."
