The meaning of "Except Fasting, for it is exclusively for Me and I shall give reward for it"
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: "Every act of the son of Adam is for him except Fasting (Sawm), for it is exclusively for Me and I shall give reward for it. And fasting is a shield. When one of you is fasting, he should avoid intimate relations (with his wife) and quarreling, and if someone insults or fights him, he should say, "I am a person who is fasting." And by the One in Whose Hand is Muhammad's soul indeed, the bad odor of the mouth of a fasting person is more fragrant to Allah than the scent of musk. A fasting person has two joyful occasions about which he is happy: He is happy when he breaks his fast and he is happy when he meets his Lord because of his fast.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
The attributing of fasting exclusively to Allah is to give honor and nobility to it due to its virtue and great status and otherwise all the other acts of worship are His such as prayer and Zakat, all of them are rightfully His but fasting has been attributed exclusively to Allah out of giving honor to it because it is a worship which is done in secret. No one knows about it except Allah. This is why He (Allah) says:" And I shall give reward for it" although Allah gives reward for all the acts of worship.
