Salah of Thankfulness to Allah
Question:
“I was about fifteen or sixteen years old when a happy event occurred to me, and so I resolved that every day I would offer two Rak`ahs (units of Prayer) in thankfulness to Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He). After some time, I came to know that the Salah (Prayer) of thankfulness to Allah is referred to in the Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) as Sujud-ul-Shukr (Prostration of Thankfulness to Allah). Since then, every day I offer two Sujuds rather than two Rak`ahs in thankfulness to Allah (Exalted be He). Is what I am doing now right? If it is not, what should I do? Please guide me.”
Answer:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) would fall down in prostration to Allah (Exalted be He) whenever he heard any good news. This indicates that Sujud-ul-Shukr is Mustahab (desirable) when a person receives a blessing or is saved from evil. Sujud-ul-Shukr consists of one prostration only.
There is no basis in Shari`ah (Islamic law) for repeating Sujud-ul-Shukr every day. It is prescribed to offer Sujud-ul-Shukr when a blessing is granted or an evil is warded off. It is also baseless in Shari`ah to have the intention to offer two Rak`ahs in thankfulness to Allah (Exalted be He) every day. Likewise, there is no basis in Shari`ah for continuously offering two Rak`ahs in thankfulness to Allah, and the same applies to offering Sujud-ul-Shukr continuously.”
