Is it permissible to do the Istikharah without offering two rakats of prayer?
Question:
“Is it permissible to do the Istikharah (dua for guidance, to choose what is good for oneself) without offering two rakats of salah (prayer), or without wudhu (ablution), and is it permissible for the menstruating woman and the woman in nifaas (post-natal bleeding) to do the Istikharah?”
Answer:
“Yes, the Istikharah (dua for guidance) is recommended, even without prayer. That he asks and seeks guidance from his Lord, whether it is a woman or a man and whether she is menstruating or not, all of that is no problem.
But if it (the Istikharah) is made after the prayer, it is better. The Istikharah together with the prayer would be acting by the Sunnah. He therefore prays two rakats and then asks and seeks guidance from his Lord, whether it is a man or a woman. However if it is a menstruating woman or the affair is really urgent and he (or she) does the Istikharah without prayer, then that is no problem. And all the praises and thanks belong to Allah. Allah says:
{Invoke Me, [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism)] (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your (invocation).} [Surah Ghafir 40:60]
And Al Istikharah is invocation (dua), facing towards Allah.”
