Is it permissible to discontinue the Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid when the Iqamah is being said?
Question:
"May Allah reward you! The questioner says: Is it permissible to discontinue the Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid (two-unit prayer to salute the mosque) when the Iqamah (call to start prayer) is being said in the first rakat?"
Answer:
"The basis with regards to the supererogatory prayers is...
It has been reported in the hadeeth that he (the Prophet), may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, said: "When the Iqamah is announced, then no prayer should be observed save the obligatory prayer."
The scholars have stated: This is regarding the beginning, that he makes the takbir (saying: "Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]") for the supererogatory prayer and then the Iqamah is being said. However if he raises his head from the ruku' (bowing position) in the second rakat of the supererogatory prayer and the Iqamah is being said, then let him complete it (the supererogatory prayer) because the remaining part is not a complete prayer, so there is no objection.
But if he makes the takbir in the first (rakat) for the supererogatory prayer and then the Imam announces then the Sunnah is to discontinue it (the supererogatory prayer)."
