Is anyone who commits an Innovation considered to be an Innovator?
Questioner:
”Is anyone who commits an innovation considered to be an innovator? What is the criterion in regards to this issue?”
Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi'ee (rahimahullah) answers saying:
”We have spoken more than once regarding this and the truth is that we have become tired from the speech in regards to this. The criterion is that the innovator is an innovator. Does this suffice or not?!
Yes, and what I mean by this is that the person who has with him innovations like the birthdays, celebration of the twenty seventh day of Rajab, celebration of the festivity of migration, celebrating the night of the middle of Sha’baan and also like the gatherings that the Sufi’s perform and they dance inside the mosques, this (person), call him an innovator and no respect (is given).
However a Sunni that fell into an innovation, then say (to him) this action of yours is an innovation and don’t name him an innovator, as has occurred with ‘Uthman (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) in regards to the first Athaan of Al-Jumu’ah. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar used to name it an innovation (i.e. the first call to prayer for Jumu’ah). However there isn’t anyone who is bold enough to name ‘Uthman an innovator (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
I have a question for you. Who is the person for it? Let him say ‘me’!
Shaykh Yahya al-Hajooree (hafidhahullah) responded, so Shaykh Muqbil (rahimahullah) asked:
”Yes. So if a person says: “You are saying that what ‘Uthman has done isn’t from the sunnah and the Messenger (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم) says: “Upon you is my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, bite onto it with your molar teeth” so what is our answer regarding that?”
Shaykh Yahya (hafidhahullah) answers:
”The answer is; that the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم) says “…the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs” he didn’t say the sunnah of one of them and based upon this if he says “…the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs” and we were to grab onto the statement of one from among them, then we haven’t grabbed onto their sunnah as a whole. I believe Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm mentioned regarding this hadeeth that if we were to grab onto the statement of one of them and leave off the rest, we would have erred, however we take from all their statements what complies with the evidence.”
Shaykh Muqbil (rahimahullah) replies:
”Good, you have answered correctly. May Allah reward you with good.”
