How to respond to the salām which has been conveyed to you

The student reads:

"He, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said: "'Abdullāh narrated to us, and he said: Al-Layth narrated to me and he said: Yūnus narrated to me from Ibn Shihāb that he said: Abū Salamah said that 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allāh, may peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O 'Ā'ish, this is Jibrīl and he sends you salāms." She said: upon which I said: Wa 'Alayhis-Salāmu wa Rahmatullāhi wa Barakātuhu (and may peace, Allāh's mercy and blessings be upon him), you see what I don't see; she is referring to the Messenger of Allāh, may peace and blessings be upon him."

Shaykh 'Abdur-Razzāq Al-Badr, may Allāh preserve him:

"Then he (Imām Al-Bukhāri), may Allāh, Exalted is He, have mercy upon him, has reported this Hadīth, the Hadīth of 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, and it has already preceded that we came across this Hadīth, however the author (Imām Al-Bukhāri), may Allāh have mercy upon him, has reported it (here once again) in order to explain how to respond to the salām. In order to explain how to respond to the salām, and that being in 'Ā'ishah' response to the salām which the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, passed on to her from Jibrīl.

He (the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibrīl sends you salāms."

She thereupon said: "Wa 'Alayhis-Salāmu wa Rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu (and may peace, Allāh's mercy and blessings be upon him).

Something similar to it has also been reported in the Hadīth of Khadījah (may Allāh be pleased with her); (when) she said: "'Alayka wa 'Alayhis-Salām (may peace be upon you and him)."

We also just recently came across (the narration of) the man who passed on the salām of his father to the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him; (upon which) he (the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Alayka wa 'Alayhis-Salām (may peace be upon you and him (your father)."

Consequently his statement "how the salām is responded to" is regarding when the salām is transmitted and narrated to the individual. And so he responds in this manner. You may say:
  • "Alayka wa 'Alayhis-Salām (may peace be upon you and him)", and you may say:
  • "wa 'Alayhis-Salām (and may peace be upon him), and if you add
  • "wa Rahmatullāhi wa Barakātuhu (and Allāh's mercy and blessings)" then this is more complete, then this is more complete.
Thus you return the salām to him in this manner. The way of returning the conveyed salām is therefore to be done in this manner; you may either say: "Wa 'alayhis-Salām wa Rahmatullāh (and may peace and Allāh's mercy be upon him)", meaning upon the one who sent me the salām, or you say "Wa 'Alayka wa 'Alayhis-Salām (and may peace be upon you and him)", whereby you will have included in your response (both) the conveyor and the sender, the conveyor and the sender. This one is permissible and this one is permissible (as well), and the Sunnah has been reported regarding all two of them."
