How does a student of knowledge attain humbleness?
Question:
“How does a student of knowledge become abstinent from this worldly life, humble with his knowledge, not arrogant, and his heart attached with Allah?”
Answer:
“A student of knowledge has to know his own situation, his weakness, inability and his being in need of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
Then he should read the biography of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and what he صلى الله عليه وسلم used to be upon by way of humbleness.
For example the Bedouin would approach him and grab him by his صلى الله عليه وسلم cloak until that would leave marks on his صلى الله عليه وسلم side and say: “Oh Muhammad give me, for indeed you are not giving me from your own wealth, nor from your father's wealth." So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would give him. And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “No one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him.”
Therefore the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم biography and the biographies of the companions رضي الله عنهم help you in being humble.
Likewise that you know yourself and what you possess from weakness and inability, and that you are subject to illnesses and other than that. Hence this will help you in entrusting your affair with Allah."
