Following the faults of the Muslims
This is not permissible barakAllahu feek... to follow the faults of the Muslims, and in particular that of the scholars, is forbidden. It has been narrated in a hadeeth:
“Oh you who have believed with your tongues, while the faith has not entered into your hearts; do not gossip about the Muslims and do not follow their faults. Because verily, those who follow the faults of his brother; Allah will follow his faults. And the ones whose faults Allah follows; He will reveal them…” I think he said: “...even in the hiding place of his mother (i.e. in her home).”
It is therefore not permitted for us to follow the faults. And following the faults, is (itself) a fault. In other words, those who follow the faults of the people, falls at that moment himself into a fault.
What is incumbent, barakAllahu feek. What is incumbent (upon us), with regards to the one who does something for which he may be criticized; is that the man defends his brother when he hears someone criticize him because of it. And that he says: “Maybe the matter is ambiguous… or perhaps he has an interpretation…” Especially, if he is known for (his) truthfulness, sincerity and love for spreading knowledge.
