Fasting does not just mean abstaining from food and drink

Fasting in the Islamic legislation is not only appertaining to leaving off food and drink. Rather it furthermore includes:
  • the fasting of the heart from every evil thought,
  • the fasting of the hearing from listening to every false speech,
  • the fasting of the eye from looking at what Allāh has prohibited, and
  • the fasting of all the limbs for Allāh.

It (fasting) narrows the passages of the Shaytān (the devil) who flows through the son of Ādam (i.e. the human being) like blood.[1] Therefore it doesn't leave any good passage for him. Subsequently the acts of obedience increase and the sins become less.

It (fasting) disciplines the tongue. Hence it calls it to goodness and to dhikr (remembrance) and the recitation of the Qur'ān. It nurtures it upon forbearance, patience and turning away from the ignorant, and to not being unconsidered with the foolish, stupid and dumb. And if anyone reviles or insults him he should say: "I am fasting."[2]

Jābir, may Allāh be pleased with him, states:

"When you are fasting then:
  • let your hearing, sight and your tongue, fast from the prohibited things.
  • Don't harm your neighbour.
  • Let there be tranquillity and dignity upon you in your fast.
  • And don't make the day you fast look the same as the day you don't fast."[3]

Footnote translator:
[1] It has been reported on the authority of the Mother of the Believers Safiyyah Bint Huyayy, may Allāh be pleased with her, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The Shaytān flows through the human being like blood." [Bukhārī and Muslim]
[2] It has been reported on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, may Allāh be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "When any of you is observing Sawm (fasting) on a day, he should neither utter obscenities nor act in an ignorant manner. If anyone reviles him or tries to fight him, he should say: "I am fasting." [Bukhārī and Muslim]
[3] Narrated by Ibn Al-Mubārak in Az-Zuhd.
