Fasting does not just mean abstaining from food and drink
Fasting in the Islamic legislation is not only appertaining to leaving off food and drink. Rather it furthermore includes:
It (fasting) narrows the passages of the Shaytān (the devil) who flows through the son of Ādam (i.e. the human being) like blood.[1] Therefore it doesn't leave any good passage for him. Subsequently the acts of obedience increase and the sins become less.
It (fasting) disciplines the tongue. Hence it calls it to goodness and to dhikr (remembrance) and the recitation of the Qur'ān. It nurtures it upon forbearance, patience and turning away from the ignorant, and to not being unconsidered with the foolish, stupid and dumb. And if anyone reviles or insults him he should say: "I am fasting."[2]
Jābir, may Allāh be pleased with him, states:
"When you are fasting then:

- the fasting of the heart from every evil thought,
- the fasting of the hearing from listening to every false speech,
- the fasting of the eye from looking at what Allāh has prohibited, and
- the fasting of all the limbs for Allāh.

- let your hearing, sight and your tongue, fast from the prohibited things.
- Don't harm your neighbour.
- Let there be tranquillity and dignity upon you in your fast.
- And don't make the day you fast look the same as the day you don't fast."[3]

إذ الصوم في الشرع لم يكن مختصا بترك الطعام والشراب بل صوم القلب عن كل فكر سيئ. وصوم السمع عن الإصغاء لكل قول باطل. وصوم العين عن النظر إلى ما حرم الله. وصوم كل الجوارح لله. يضيق مجاري الشيطان من ابن آدم الذي يجري منه مجرى الدم. فلا يدع له مجرا جيدا. فتكثر الطاعات وتقل السيات. يهذب اللسان. فهو يدعوه إلى الخير وإلى الذكر وتلاوة القرآن. يريبيه على الحلم والصبر والإعراض عن الجاهلين. وأن لا يكون طائشا مع السفهاء والحمقى والمغفلين. وإن أحد سابه أو شاتمه فليقل اني امرء صائم. يقول جابر رضي الله عنه: اذا صمت فليصم سمعك وبصرك ولسانك عن المحارم ودع عنك أذى الجار وليكن عليك في صومك سكينة ووقار ولا تجعل يوم صومك ويوم فطرك سواء
