Does the Hadeeth "The best Jihad is a word of truth in front of an oppressive ruler" apply to someone who criticizes the ruler openly in the media?
Question:
"Does the Hadeeth "The best Jihad is a word of truth in front of an oppressive ruler" [1] apply to someone who criticizes the ruler openly in the media?"
Answer:
"No, the Hadeeth says "in front of" an oppressive ruler, meaning verbally, in front of him. It does not say that he criticizes him openly on the mimbars and on the streets, it says in front of him. Allah (جل وعلا) said to Musa and Harun (عليهما السلام): {So go you both to him}[2], meaning Fir'aun, {And speak to him mildly}[3]. Yes."
Footnote by translator:
[1] The hadeeth has been declared Saheeh by the great muhaddith Al-Albaanee, may Allah have mercy upon him, in Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah.
[2] Surah Ta-Ha 20, 47
[3] Surah Ta-Ha 20, 44
Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan Al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him
