Can someone claim that he believes in Allah and His Messenger but not perform any good deeds?
Question:
"He says: “Is it possible that there is a believer who believes in Allah and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) and in Paradise and Hell, while he does not perform any good deeds?”"
Answer:
“Maybe someone who claims. I say it is possible that he claims. I say that someone claims that he is a believer while not performing any good deeds, (this) is present. Making claims is simple and easy.”
Questioner: “It seems like if he is alluding to the narration: “People will be taken out of the Fire who did not perform any good deeds.””
Shaykh: “No. The one who has a ‘dharra’ (the size of a grain of sand) of Imaan, then this will be visible on his body, but this does not mean that he did not perform any deeds. However it is possible that he performed actions, but that they have gone, meaning that the creditors[1] took them.”
Shaykh 'Abdul-Muhsin bin Hamad al-'Abbaad, may Allah preserve him
Footnote by translator:
[1] Like in the hadeeth: One day, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said to his Companions (رضي الله عنهم): “Who do you consider to be bankrupt?” They answered: “The bankrupt person is he who has no Dirham or belongings.” He (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “The bankrupt person is he who comes on the Day of Judgement with good deeds that are like mountains. However, he has wronged so and so, hit so and so, cursed so and so, usurped the wealth of so and so. Then so and so will take from his good deeds, followed by another who will take from his good deeds if there are any left. If not, he will take from their bad deeds; those bad deeds will be heaped upon him, and then he will be thrown into the Fire.” [Sahih Muslim, 2581]
