A clarification regarding al-Imaan and a defense of the great Muhaddith ash-Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee
Question:
The questioner says: “May Allah reward you with goodness. A narration in As-Silsilati s-Saheehah of Shaykh al-Albaanee, (narrated) from the Prophet
“Two kinds of my Ummah will not pass by the Hawdh (The Pond of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم): the Murji’ah and the Qadariyyah.”
The question is: What is the wisdom behind jointly mentioning these two groups? Are there still, in our time, those who speak with or believe that with which the early Murji’ah spoke or believed?”
Answer:
“This narration, which was declared hasan by the Shaykh (al-Albaanee) may Allah have mercy upon him – and a group of scholars have preceded him in declaring it to be hasan – clarifies the danger of these two groups. The Murji’ah and the Qadariyyah.
And the Murji’ah are those who say: “A sin does not harm in the presence of Imaan, just like obedience does not benefit in the presence of disbelief.”
And the early ones from them – and even some of those from later times – are Ibaahiyyoon, say: “If you say Laa Illaaha Illa l-Laah, then do as you please.”
And they claim that al-Imaan is nothing more than at-Tasdeeq (i.e. belief in the heart), and from them are those who add to it al-Qawl (i.e. speech with the tongue), and they remove al-’Amal (i.e. the actions) from al-Imaan.
And whoever is of the opinion that actions altogether do not belong to al-Imaan and claims that the one who utters the two testifications (that there is no deity worthy of worship truly except Allah and that Muhammad, may the peace and blessings be upon him, is the messenger of Allah) and believes in the declaration of faith enters Islam, has fabricated the greatest of lies about Allah. And the people of knowledge have established a consensus that the one who leaves off all actions, is not a believer (mu’min).
This is why many of the Salaf said: “Al-Imaan is speech and action.”
In fact, al-Imam al-Bukhaaree (رحمه الله) said: “I've come across a thousand scholars who said: “Al-Imaan is speech and action.””
And Sufyaan ibn ‘Uyaynah (رحمه الله) said: “I've come across 62 scholars, all of them said: “Al-Imaan is speech and action.””
Therefore, whoever removes the actions from al-Imaan and declares it to be permissible to leave off (all) actions, is not a Muslim!
And from al-Imaan – which consists of speech, action and belief – is that which if it is left off, it would cause Imaan absolutely and without exception to be nullified, and that is at-Tawheed. And this is a consensus.
And from it is that which if it is abandoned, it would cause – according to the most correct of the statements of the scholars – Imaan to be nullified. And that is leaving off the salaat, even if it is out of laziness. Therefore the one who leaves off the salaat is a disbeliever, and not a believer, regardless if he leaves it off out of denial (of its obligation), or out of laziness.
And from it is that which by way of it the mandatory Imaan decreases, like leaving off the rest of the obligations out of negligence, and not out of denial (of its obligation), and like committing certain forbidden matters, without declaring it permissible. And from it is that which by way of it the recommended Imaan decreases, and it is leaving off the recommended matters.
This is the Murji’ah.
And as for the Qadariyyah; then most of them belong to the Mu’tazilah, and they can be divided into two groups:
Al-Qadariyyatu l-Jabriyyah, and they are the Irjaa-ideology-carrying Jahmiyyah.
And the al-Qadariyyatu n-Nufaah, and they are the deniers of al-Qadar (predestination). And they are the ones who say that Allah does not create the actions of the servants/slaves, and they are the Mu’tazilah.
And the Mu’tazilah are on the opposite of the extreme of the Murji’ah. While they (the Mu’tazilah) confirm that they deny the predestination, they say – and I’m referring to the Mu’tazilah like Waasil ibn ‘Ataa’, ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubayd and others – they say that the committer of a major sin is in a station between the two stations: not a believer and also not a disbeliever. And when he dies while remaining (on that sin), then he will remain in the Hellfire for eternity. In the end, they agree with the Khawaarij.
And it has been mentioned in the narration: “The Qadariyyah are the Majoos (the magians) of this Ummah. When they become ill, do not visit them, and when they die, do not follow their Janaa’iz (funeral processions).”
In short, these two sects belong to the worst sects!
What remains to be said is: Are they still present? Is al-Irjaa’ still present now?
Yes, it is present!
Hence those who do not pray and then say: “Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” These people are Murji’ah, because the one who does not pray is a disbeliever. And the ones who are of the opinion that committing forbidden matters isn't a problem and does not matter; they are disbelievers, Murji’ah and extremists.
However, whoever has been tried by committing some sins, while he believes that they are forbidden, without leaving off at-Tawheed or leaving off as-salaat; then there is no doubt that this one does not step out of the realm of al-Imaan (i.e. does not become a disbeliever). But he is rather a believer with deficient Imaan or a believer due to his Imaan and a sinner due to his major sin, or a sinful believer, or something in that direction.
And as with regards to what sometimes occurs of labeling Muslims with al-Irjaa’, by some people, because they do not agree with them in some statements; then this is truly the (unjustly) accusing of Muslims. Like those who label ash-Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee with al-Irjaa’, while he (i.e. al-Albaanee) says:
“Is it imaginable that someone claims that he who says Laa Ilaaha Illaa l-Laah and leaves off actions, is a Muslim? No, by Allah, he is not a Muslim.”
This is his statement, may Allah have mercy upon him. He said: “Who claims al-Imaan, and does not perform any actions at all, is not a Muslim.”
And this is with consensus of the Muslims!
This is a clarification regarding some general (statements) which have been abused by some ignoramuses; after which they labelled the Muslims with al-Irjaa’, while they are far away from it. And on the basis of that, they have built judgments, and to Allah the differences will return.
Let us therefore take care and keep our tongues from violating the honour of the scholars, for verily, the honour of the scholars is poisonous. And the Sunnah of Allah towards those who dispraise them is well known.”
