The ruling on Salah when food has been served
Question:
"May Allah bless you. A listener from Iraq, the Ta'meen governorate, who abridged his name with (the Arabic letters) daal, meem and seen, says: "When the time for prayer has come and a person is in front of a meal, does he get up and pray or does he finish eating the meal?""
Answer:
"When the Iqaamah (second call to prayer) is being said and a person is having his meal, he may finish it and will not be sinful if he misses the prayer in this situation, due to the statement of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him:
"When dinner has been served, then start with it (first) before the prayer."[1]
And similarly when dinner or lunch have been served and then the Adhan or the Iqaamah are being said; there is no harm upon the individual to (first) eat and then go to his prayer. And if he were to miss the prayer in this situation there would be no sin upon him, due to the statement of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him:
"There is no prayer when the food is present or when one is resisting the urge to urinate or defecate."[2]
However, it is not befitting for the individual to make it his habit; that the time for his lunch and the time for his dinner are (exactly) at the time of prayer, because that will lead to him missing the prayer deliberately. But if it happens that the food is being served while the Iqaamah is being said, then the food is to be given precedence in this situation."

[2] Saheeh Muslim.
