The virtue of knowledge
Allah (The Perfect and Most High) says:
{Allah will exalt (raise) in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.} [Surah Al-Mujadilah 58:11]
The scholars have stated with regards to the meaning of this verse: Allah raises the believers from the people of knowledge above the believers who are not from the people of knowledge in degree. And this degree (lofty rank) is present in this life and in the Hereafter. Thus it is a degree in this life in form of a high status and a good reputation and it is a degree in the Hereafter, in a literal sense, in form of lofty stations in Paradise.
And there's no doubt that only the practicing scholar who acts upon his knowledge achieves this virtue. Hence he carries out the obligations and keeps away from the prohibitions. So therefore the scholar who acts upon his knowledge is called rightly guided. He is the rightly guided on the straight path.
And as for the scholar who does not act upon his knowledge, thus leaves off the obligations and falls into the prohibitions knowingly and not out of ignorance then in this one is a resemblance of the Jews.
