The ruling on attending Christmas events, exchanging gifts and offering congratulations
Question:
"And also brother Abu 'Aisha Al-Fadhli from Kuwait asks and he says: "Virtuous Shaykh, with this Gregorian month having entered, the Christmas celebrations of the Christians and their festivities commence; what is the ruling on joining them in their celebrations whether in form of holding them (these celebrations), attending them, exchanging gifts or offering congratulations?"
Answer:
"All of this is impermissible. It is impermissible to join them (the Christians) in them (their celebrations) and to attend them.
Allah the Mighty and Excalted says:
{And (the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are) those who do not witness falsehood.} [Surah Al-Furqan 25:72]
Meaning they don't attend the festivities of the disbelievers, because attending them means approving them and being pleased with wrong-doing (Munkar), and this is impermissible, and (also) to congratulate them (the Christians) in them. All of this is impermissible because they are newly introduced festivities, they are not even legislated in the religion of the Christians itself. However they (the Christians) themselves introduced them. Yes."
Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan Al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him
