The different types of Zulm (wrongdoing, oppression)
Zulm is of three types.
The first type: And it is the greatest, heaviest and most severe of them. It is to make Zulm against oneself by committing major shirk. And Shirk is called Zulm. [1]
The second type: Is Zulm of the servants (of Allah) against each other[2]. That someone transgresses against another with regards to his blood by killing him, or with regards to his body by cutting off a body-part, inflicting a wound, frightening him or by imprisoning him without right, or with regards to his wealth by stealing it or taking it by force, and other than that.
The third type: Is to make Zulm against oneself [3] in those affairs which are between the servant and Allah. Such as the sins which the human being commits and which have nothing to do with the people, not with regards to their blood, money and honor.
Footnotes by translator:
[1] Like in the verse in Surah Luqman: {And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: "O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed.} [Surah Luqman 31:13]
[2] Like in the hadeeth qudsi, where He, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), says: “O My slaves, I have forbidden zulm (injustice, wrongdoing, unfairness) to Myself and I have made it haraam among you, so do not wrong one another.” [Narrated by Muslim, 2577]
[3] Like in the verse in Surah Al-Fatir: {Then We gave the Book the Quran) for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose (the followers of Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم). Then of them are some who wrong (make Zulm against) their ownselves, and of them are some who follow a middle course, and of them are some who are, by Allah's Leave, foremost in good deeds. That (inheritance of the Quran), that is indeed a great grace.} [Surah Al-Fatir 35:32]
