Is the hadeeth "The differing of my Ummah is a mercy" authentic?
Question:
"He says: Oh virtuous Shaykh, may Allah grant you success! Is this an authentic hadeeth: "The differing of my ummah is a mercy" [1]?"
Answer:
"No. It is not an authentic hadeeth. And differing is not a mercy. Differing is a punishment. And Allah the Majestic and Most High forbade differing and disunity. Differing occurs but it is settled by returning back to the Book of Allah...
{(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and his Messenger
And otherwise it does occur. From the nature of the human being is that differing occurs but it is obligatory to return back to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (May Allah send peace and blessings upon him) and the differing will come to an end. But as for us remaining upon differing, no, that is impermissible. Yes."
Footnote by translator:
[1] The great Muhaddith Muhammad Naasiruddeen al-Albaanee, may Allah have mercy upon him, mentions in "Silsilah al-ahaadeeth ad-da'eefah" regarding this hadeeth: "There is no basis for it".
