Is giving speeches and talks in Ramadān opposing the actions of the Salaf?
Question:
"We find that the righteous Salaf would stop teaching the people in Ramadān and we notice today, however, that in many mosques speeches and talks are held almost on a daily basis; is this opposing the actions of the Salaf?"
Answer:
"Firstly: Not all of the Salaf would stop doing righteous deeds, teaching, teaching hadīth and studying. Yes, it has been reported about some of them; so that they could devote themselves to the recitation of the Qur'ān. Having said that, the Prophet ﷺ fought Jihād in Ramadān, at the Battle of Badr, and carried out all righteous deeds in Ramadān. However, there is undoubtedly a connection between Ramadān and the Qur'ān, because it is the month of the Qur'ān.
{شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ}
{The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'ān}
[Sūrah Al-Baqarah 2:185]
So if one devotes oneself fully or partly to studying the Qur'ān and its recitation and increases in that, then this is what some of the Salaf did. Teaching, similarly, is from the best of righteous deeds; as is calling to Allāh.
{وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ قَوۡلࣰا مِّمَّن دَعَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ}
{And who is better in speech than one who calls to Allāh}
[Sūrah Fussilat 41:33]
These are from the best deeds that bring one close to Allāh in Ramadān and outside of Ramadān.
The central point of the matter is that what has been reported about the Salaf is conveyed only to encourage increasing in the recitation of the Qur'ān; not to completely ban righteous deeds."
